Why Mucha?

I want to uplift women entrepreneurs in my community through art and take action to bring art to the people. In today’s world, it is easy to overlook the artistic value that surrounds us in everyday life. Mucha’s works reminded me that everything– from money to furniture– has artistic significance, and I hope to remind others of that too.

Why Women of Color Owned Small Businesses?
I want to break economic barriers to access and uplift underrepresented groups in art. Mucha’s art depicts his female subjects with grace and passion– traits I see reflected in my matriarchal Latina family and in female entrepreneurs. The women running businesses should see themselves in the characteristic Mucha Art Nouveau style.

The
Process
Ideation and Conversation
Talking and getting to know the business and its owners. Getting a sense of their customer base and products.
Sketching and Planing
I came up with my own sketch and ideas. I brought in references from Mucha and collaborated to explain and include cultural details.
Deciding Colors & Revisions
Using the revised sketches, I painted on colors I thought would be suitable. Often, I found my color palette changing over time.
Sketching on the Poster
With all the planing done, I began to work on the finalized posters by scaling up a clean sketch.
Painting & Detail Work
I dedicated time to painting the poster and would return after a few weeks to focus on the detail work and outlining.
Sharing and Education
After I finished my posters, I shared them with the businesses in the formats they requested. I also took time to discuss the experience with them and their outlook and relationship with art.
